Are the unions the real winners in the IBM Overtime suit? January 25, 2008

When all is said and done, I wonder if organized labor could be the ultimate beneficiary of IBM’s recent decision to settle the overtime lawsuit. In the settlement, 8 thousand workers were reclassified as non-exempt and made eligible for overtime but were immediately given a 15% pay cut so that expenses wouldn’t change. This certainly falls under the category of “be careful what you ask for.” With a possible economic slowdown looming and the potential for reduced career mobility, will more workers seek representation in retaliation?

Enterprise software has never looked more like a hillbilly family tree. Is hillbilly really one word? - it passed spell check, but I digress.
Consolidation in the market at this level makes the geeks and analysts quiver with delight over having something new to talk about. I have seen a great deal of repetition of the boring facts of the deals but what does it really change? Janus Boye’s post on the Oracle/BEA deal succinctly points out one the biggest dilemmas for Oracle. What to do with 4 portal products. It is not a new problem for tech acquisitions.

As the saying goes, “you can teach an old dog new tricks” and maybe that’s why puppies are so cute. (Oh yes you are ugglie booglie.)

If you don’t get this list from CMS Wire - go back to dropping fries for a living. I can already dispute one though. The secret to installing Documentum is not encoded in Renaissance paintings. You have to put every other letter of the WDK Development Guide in a matrix and figure it out from there. Hint: It eventually leads to an Armenian restaurant in Pleasanton with a great view and a rack of lamb that is to die for.

I’ve had a day to ponder the deal and collect opinions around the office and I don’t feel better about the situation. EMC signing a new agreement with Autonomy was not a total shock. It was a measured business response to the changing ecosystem of enterprise software partnerships. I’ve been in many conversations since the FAST/Documentum integration was released where people complained about the early performance problems and complexity it introduced. The flexibility of the approach made sense to everybody, but for the thousands of poor souls who had (and still have) to upgrade to the platform and introduce N number of additional processes to monitor, migrate customizations, change ops procedures, et.al. - it was daunting if not downright overwhelming.

Microsoft announced a 1.2 Billion dollar takeover bid for FAST Search and Transfer, the underlying search engine for Documentum since they abandoned Verity with D5 release. This change was one of the most complex and vexing administrative changes for long time Documentum users. EMC announced this morning a new OEM agreement with Autonomy which bought Verity in 2005. These moves have enormous impact on the EMC Content Management community and will be especially disturbing for those struggling with upgrades and support planning. - More on this later…
