eRoom Users Call to Action March 31, 2008

I’d be kidding myself if I didn’t admit that Sharepoint will control most of the collaboration market space but there is need and profit in the rest of that pie chart. IBM is not backing away from collaboration but EMC’s lack of vocal support of eRoom, pandering to backend integration and promises for the delayed Rich Internet Client suggest that eRoom is doomed. It could be that the market has made it’s decision already but YOU the customer have the power to SAVE EROOM.  (more…)

Adobe - FlashPaper vs. PDF March 28, 2008

Wow another portable document format.  Market leader Adobe Acrobat PDF better watch out or Adobe Macromedia FlashPaper will eat their market share.  Oh wait a minute, Adobe and Adobe, oh.  I get it, another company where two divisions don’t talk to each other.

Looks like Adobe’s been creating a new portable document format specifically for the web.  Back when Macromedia was independent the idea of a portable document format in Flash was a great idea.  Now that it’s part of Adobe does it really make sense?  What’s does FlashPaper have to offer that PDF doesn’t.

Considering a CEVA Strategy? March 27, 2008

There have been several articles written about CEVAs but they all seem to have been written for the customer not the vendor.  I think it’s too early to talk about how a customer should choose a CEVA when there’s only one CEVA to choose from.  What we really need is for vendors and VARS to look at a CEVA strategy as a new way to build their products.

It’s simple to say that we should relate CEVAs to relational database platforms, but even this level of clarity doesn’t exist for CEVA.  There are basic questions around CEVAs that have not been answered.  So let’s answer them.

XML Repositories - If You Can’t Beat ‘Em - Open Source ‘Em March 26, 2008

Recently I read where Oracle contributed their XQilla XQuery Engine to the Apache open source community. The engine and the Oracle Berkeley DB XML repository are well known projects in the XML repository space. Despite the humanitarian rhetoric (and active contribution) that surrounds announcements like these, seldom does a large company have motivations for open sourcing their developments other than money. Open Text Ripe for Takeover, Eh? March 23, 2008

When a local paper starts to speculate on acquisitions, I’ve learned to take notice. You see those of us in the industry have our contacts usually with either an NDA or FrieNDA in place. But papers have theirs sources, some friend of a friend to a journalist.

So the article over the weekend caught my attention. Was this some journalist with a hot tip trying to make his mark or a piece to beef up the Saturday business section? I read the article from the Waterloo Record hoping to discover a tip but discovering it was more filler. But it did bring up an interesting candidate, though the author didn’t see it himself. So while Lee looked at where Open Text was today, I thought I’d look at where they might go. I loved to see the quote, “Representatives of … said their company doesn’t comment on acquisition speculations.” But we can speculate. So let me look at the two motioned in the article and one that I can’t believe that wasn’t.

Vignette ICE cold to Self-Syndication March 20, 2008

By now some of you have discovered the mission of the BigMenOnContent. To support our mission, I thought it was time to build a consolidated view of the news in the ECM landscape. In the process of adding RSS feeds to all of the top ECM vendors, I discovered something. Vignette offers RSS feeds as a product feature, has no RSS feed on their site.

Vignette created the standard for syndicating content using the ICE (Information Content and Exchange) protocol back in 1998. Yet for some reason they are ignoring  syndication of their content.  How can a company proclaim “Content Management for Next Generation Web Initiatives” and not take advantage of Next Generation Web?  It’s the old story of the cobbler’s children. Let’s see some great new ideas and showcase them like the old Vignette.

EMC Wants To Be Under Your Desk March 19, 2008

EMC has been gobbling up companies like there is no tomorrow. On Monday they sweetened the offer to acquire Iomega and this one introduces something new to EMC. With the possible exception of hosted backup and storage services from Dantz and Mozy, EMC has stayed away from marketing it’s wares directly to the home user. If they pull this one off, EMC for the first time will have real estate outside of the data center and in your home office or laptop case.

Thirteen years ago IBM acquired Lotus and with that started IBM’s second entry into content management, Lotus Notes.  Then just over eighteen months ago, IBM acquired FileNet and with that the third entry into content management.  Is the “third time a charm” or is “history repeating”?
