I just read and interview of John Thompson , CEO of Symantec and after a little research it strikes me how they have been steadily creeping into the content and storage management market. Naturally when I think of this company the first thing that comes to mind virus scanning software but three years ago the company merged with longtime backup and data center management player Veritas. This drove the comapny into some very different markets and in direct competition with EMC. (more…)
Will Participation in Web2.0 be Free? June 12, 2008

I was talking to a friend today that got a notice in the mail about joining a class action lawsuit against AOL. Back in the 90’s my friend had become a “Community Leader” for AOL. In this role it was his job to monitor a discussion boards and offer technical support to other users. Now some of these volunteers are saying they should be paid just like employees.
As I’m listening to him, I suddenly feel myself inside a railway tunnel with a train headed my way. I realized that this little lawsuit could really change Web2.0.
Flex Builder or EMC Composer IDE for Magellan June 10, 2008

I just finished up a little side project creating a custom Documentum UI with the Eclipse based FlexBuilder 3.0. I rarely code any more and this was my first opportunity to work with the technology. When learning new languages and techniques I find that I spend far less time these days with syntax than I do with the idiosyncrasies of the IDE’s.
I started this project immediately after test driving D6 Composer which is also Eclipse based. I was dreading it. My team’s experience with Composer was frustrating on many levels. After two days with FlexBuilder though I have to confess, I loved it. Flex Builder 3 was great! Despite radical differences in scope and purpose, I was surprised at how different my impressions were of the tools given that they are fundamentally the same IDE. (more…)
Is it Content Management or Storage? June 3, 2008

Alan Pelz-Share, of CMS Watch, points out that EMC’s is still about storage and Brice Dunwoodie, of CMS Wire, shows that EMC is moving to storage intensive CM, and seeing their thoughts validated after attending EMC World I’m disappointed. When EMC bought Documentum, I had hoped that they had seen the future and were focused on the value add that content management brought to their platform. It’s obvious that they had not.
Is Documentum really talking Web2.0 or is it just Jive? May 29, 2008

I was one of about 30 people to be fortunate enough to attend one of the more interesting sessions at EMC World for Documentum. Interesting in that it was all about implementing Web 2.0 solutions on top of the platform. Fortunate enough in that, for some reason, the session was scheduled for the last session of the last day. This meant for east coasters like me taking a red-eye home after losing more money at the tables.
“Taking Advantage of Social Computing with Documentum” presented EMC’s architecture in a light that would use it’s libraries for that would allow vendors to develop WIKIs, BLOGs and 360 networks that take advantage of the platform. (more…)

EMC World was exhausting but very productive and a good time was had by everyone I spoke to. By all accounts from the many postings I’ve read this has been far more informative and newsworthy than in recent years for CMA. (more…)

Three days of EMC World has had both its highs and lows. I learned some great new things, reconnected with old friends, and made new friends. I thought I’d share my closing thoughts.

The biggest surprise of EMC World so far was presented in the Tuesday keynote but for some reason the buzz wasn’t going around. I was asked last night if I had seen the Magellan demo but as I had only arrive that afternoon I had missed it. I also didn’t know that the keynotes were being published on YouTube. Had the question come from anyone else I would have thought “ho hum”, but when this gentleman makes an enthusiastic statement you pay attention. So I had my quest for Wednesday. What I found brought me back to Documentum circa 1999.

Well I’ve been roaming around EMC World for the past two days as an “Independent”. Unfortunately Lee is finding himself tethered to a booth but tells me he’s having a great time talking tech with everybody and playing with the BMOC mascots.
The conference in general has been good and I’m learning some new things that I plan to add as posts of their own. Expect an update on EMC’s OEM strategy for the CEVA series. But I thought I’d give an overview of the conference in general. My comments will come from a CM&A perspective rather than ECM in general. Pie’s been doing a great job commenting on the individual sessions, so I won’t focus there.

I was inspired by two recent posts. Pie’s invitation to meet him at EMC World and Chuck Hollis’ post on transparency in blogging.
I’ll be manning the Armedia booth (#336) at EMC World in Las Vegas this year and I’d love for you to stop by and visit. I’d like to tell you that I have lofty goals to investigate the inner workings of EMC and uncover some remarkable technical insight. The truth is I’ll be there for 4 days of shameless self promotion. I hope you’ll stop by and chat a while about how much we miss Workspace, swap war stories and talk about how bright our futures look with all things EMC. (and SharePoint)
Marko will be prowling the floor in his BMOC shirt. I’ll try to come up with some sort of fitting reward for anyone who hunts him down and says something witty and insulting.
At heart, I’m still a geek though and I hope to learn quite a lot this year. I am most looking forward to learning as much as I can about what they plan on doing with eRoom, what their strategy really is for SharePoint and seeing what others are doing with Documentum and RIA’s.
We’ll see you in Vegas.
